An Analysis On The Global Suicide Rate From 1985 - 2016

INTRODUCTION

Suicidal behavior is a major public health priority. A major contributor to the decline of the human population are deaths related to mental health. My team and I were tasked with creating a Suicide rate insight analysis by Side Hustle Bootcamp. To create this we worked on a dataset showing Suicide rate all across the globe.

In a 2018 review article by John Billsen, it is said that suicide occurs more often in older than in younger people, but is still one of the leading causes of death in late childhood and adolescence worldwide. This not only results in a direct loss of many young lives, but also has disruptive psychosocial and adverse socio-economic effects.

The aim of our project was to create a clear visualization showing the effect of the economic cycle on suicide rate. This project took us through the process of data scraping, cleaning and visualization. The tools used during the process includes google, Microsoft Excel and Power BI Desktop.

Process involved includes

• Data scraping

• Data cleaning

• Data visualization

Data Scraping: Data was sourced from kaggle.com considering the detailed requirements given to us.

Data Cleaning: The scraped data were imported into excel to enable us clean it using Microsoft Excel. We changed the data types for each column to better fit its description, capitalized the first letter of each header column by using a PROPER function. We deleted column that had 100% empty cells. We carried out a LEFT function to get an Age column that did not include age at the end of each entry. We deleted all duplicate values in the datasets. Finally proceeding to Power BI to merge our continent dataset with our cleaned Suicide dataset, we also changed the data category for both country and regions to enable us display the affected locations on a heat map.

Data Visualization: Having transformed and loaded the datasets from Power query to Power BI, we proceeded to visualize the datasets on the dashboards. The visuals included the following:

• Total Suicide Rate

• Suicide Rate by country

• Suicide Rate and Gdp per capital by country

• Suicide By Age

• Suicide Rate By Year

• Suicide Rate By generation

• Infected Locations Heat Map

RECOMMENDATION/CONCLUSION

Recommendation and conclusion with regards to Global Suicide Rate Analysis:

  1. From the bar chart showing the Suicide rate by country, we noticed that the Russian Federation has the highest suicide death among the top 5 countries displayed. We recommend that the Russian government should make the mental health of it citizens a top priority. They should endeavor to implement suicide prevention methods such as provision of hot lines.
  2. The Line and clustered Colum chart showing the Suicide rate and Gdp per capital by country clearly shows that Sir Lanka has the highest suicide rate and Gdp capital compared to other countries. This shows that the Gdp was not a contributing factor to the massive rate of suicide in the country.
  3. The stacked Colum chart representing Suicide number by age shows that people within the age range of 35-54 are at a higher risk of committing Suicide. This could be as a result of various factor. We recommend that Suicide preventing tools should be targeted toward the above mentioned age group. Provision of mental health safe space should be provided as well as midlife crisis help centers.
  4. From the line chart showing the Suicide rate by year, we clearly see a steady decrease in the suicide rate as the years go by. We recommend a continuous wide spread campaign for the importance of a good mental health for all people of various nations, ages, generations, races and sexs.
  5. The funnel showing the suicide rate by generation indicates that Generation Z has the lowest suicide rate while the Silent generation has the highest rate of suicide. This could be as a result of Generation Z’s openness to seek out mental help and various suicide prevention hotlines. We recommend various suicide awareness campaigns to help reduce the stigma around seeking help.
